The Future of Personal Finance

I found an interesting segment from Money Magazine in celebration of their 35th anniversary. In fact, there were quite a few interesting features in that issue. Such as, “35 Minutes to Riches” and “5 Money Dreams - A Reality”. But, I enjoyed reading through the different perspectives featured in “8 Forecasts for Your Financial Future.”

One of the more interesting, if not particularly useful, forecast came from Aubrey de Grey. I first heard of de Grey last year on a 60 Minutes episode and find his thoughts quite amusing. De Grey is a British biomedical gerontologist who studies anti-aging research and medicines, and he aims to basically “cure” aging. So, I guess it would make sense to seek his opinion on a forecast for the future from someone who seeks to extend life. Social Security and retirement will take on a whole new meaning.

In the section from Money, de Grey states that “as scientists learn more about these changes and about how to repair them, we’ll significantly postpone the age at which severe physical and mental debilitation emerges. Eventually we’ll be able to wave goodbye to the debilitation of aging altogether, because we’ll postpone its onset faster than time is passing. ”

The rest of the forecasts are interesting too and certainly worth a look.
